Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS)

The Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) comprises of data storage, image display and links to equipment that acquires the diagnostic images (digital x-rays).

PACS manages images from various sources, such as Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Scintigraphy, Computed Tomography (CT), Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA), Radiology (plain x-rays) and Medical Photography.





Sharing Images

Medical Imaging PACS is setup to share medical images with other PACS sites throughout New Zealand. When required, patients images can be transferred between MidCentral PACS and the other sites in a secure manner.

Requirements for Requesting Images From Other Centers

Only requests from clinicians, or hospital administration staff (on behalf of the requesting clinician) will be accepted.

Requests for images to be imported into MidCentral PACS will only be accepted provided the patient is an existing patient of MidCentral Health, and will require ongoing treatment within the hospital.

Images to be sent, or retrieved from MidCentral PACS can be requested in the following manner:

  • EmailPACS@midcentraldhb.govt.nz
  • Fax – (06) 350 8711
  • Phone – (06) 350 8700
  • After hours – phone (06) 350 8700 (urgent requests)

Either way, the following information must be provided:

  • Hospital/NHI number of the patient
  • Patient’s full name
  • Patient’s date of birth
  • Images required i.e. description and date of the examination
  • Urgency
  • Name and Department of the requesting clinician
  • Reason for the request
