  • Most places are less than an hour’s drive and for example, it is approximately a 30-minute drive from Palmerston North City to the Horowhenua coast.

  • Mount Ruapehu’s Whakapapa ski field and Turoa ski field are a bit over two hours away from Palmerston North.

  • MidCentral district includes the following territorial local authority districts: Horowhenua District, Manawatū District, Palmerston North City, Tararua District, and the Ōtaki ward of the Kapiti Coast District.

  • Our regional airport is Palmerston North Airport and Wellington International Airport is our nearest international airport.

  • MidCentral’s population is around 190,000 people, and the majority live in Palmerston North City. It’s widely known as a ‘student city’ and around 40% of our population either work or study at the university or other educational institutions. Around 18% of our population are aged 65 years or older. Māori make-up is over 20% of MidCentral's population.

  • We have part of the New Zealand cycle trail called the Manawatū Cycleway. There are volcanic mountains, wild west coast beaches, plus dramatic gorges like the Te Apiti – Manawatū Gorge and Iron Gates Gorge.

    MidCentral is also home to New Zealand’s biggest and most comprehensive collection of rugby memorabilia, which includes some of the world’s rarest artefacts.

    See many of New Zealand’s unique native wildlife at Wildbase Recovery. A veterinary centre helping animals recover from illness and injury, it’s open to the public in the Victoria Esplanade.

    Take in those breath-taking views of the Manawatū Riverside Walkway where you get to witness the Manawatū River and the Anzac cliff in their full glory.

    A three-day Festival of Cultures happens every year where at least 30 different cultural groups gather and share their way of life with food, music, and performances. We also have the Abbey and Hokowhitu Auditorium which host full-scale musicals, crowd-pleasers at Centrepoint theatre, and touring drama and music at The Globe.

  • Average temperature in January is 21 °C (Range: 16 °C - 25 °C). The average temperature in June is 9 °C (Range: 6 °C - 12 °C).

  • Shop local and you’ll find all your major brands, but with options of independent boutiques as well. Or look out for the many farmer markets and buy artisan fare directly from the varied growers/suppliers our region has to offer.

  • Trade Me is a good place to look for available properties to rent or buy in the area. Real Estate NZ and The Real Estate Authority are also great places to go if you’re looking at buying a property.

Aotearoa New Zealand diversity

New Zealand’s cultural make-up is becoming more diverse after high population growth in the past 10 years, according to Statistics New Zealand. The trend is expected to continue in the future.

In March 2018, there were 1,271,775 people in the census count (usually resident population) who were born overseas.

The census showed that 27.4 percent of people counted were not born in New Zealand, up from 25.2 percent in 2013. Those with an overseas birthplace were born in almost every country in the world.
