About MidCentral District Health Board

MidCentral District Health Board (MDHB) is a Crown entity and is one of 21 district health boards established nationally on January 1, 2001 under the NZ Public Health and Disability Act 2000 (NZPHD).

  • What a District Health Board does


    MidCentral DHB is responsible for “improving, promoting and protecting” the health of local residents and the communities in which they live. The Board is accountable to the Minister of Health, and responsible for around $544 million per year.

  • Planning & Funding Health & Disability Services


    District Health Boards have three key responsibilities. The first is planning & purchasing (funding) health and disability services.

  • Providing Health & Disability Services


    The second key responsibility is the provision of health and disability services, particularly through publicly-owned hospitals.

  • Board and Committees: Governing the DHB


    The third key responsibility for DHBs is governing the organisation. MDHB's Board has established committees, standing orders, and procedures to enable it to carry out its role.

  • Health Targets and Performance Overview


    Health Targets and Performance Overview reports are available for each quarter. These reports provide a overview and comparison of district health board activity against a set number of national criteria.

  • DHB Elections


    The Boards which govern District Health Boards are elected/appointed for a three-year term. The DHB elections took place in October 2010.

  • Organisation Structure


    MidCentral DHB’s structure is based on its three functions - provider, planning/purchasing and corporate.

  • centralAlliance (Central Alliance)


    The centralAlliance (Central Alliance) is acollaborative agreement between MidCentral and Whanganui District Health Boards to maximise resources and knowledge.

  • Manawhenua Hauora


    Manawhenua Hauora is a consortium of all four Iwi who have manawhenua status in the Manawatu, Horowhenua, Tararua and Otaki districts. The roopu comprises representatives from Ngati Raukawa, Muaupoko, Rangitaane and Ngati Kahungunu.

  • Meet the Management Team


    MidCentral DHB is led by an Executive Leadership Team of seven.

  • Geographic Area & Population


    MidCentral DHB’s district stretches across the North Island of New Zealand from the west to the east coast and is distinguished by the Tararua and Ruahine ranges that traverse the centre of the district.

  • Major Projects


    MidCentral District Health Board undertakes many projects which are of public interest. These relate to all aspects of the DHB, including planning/purchasing health and disability services, providing hospital and disability support services, and DHB governance.

  • Consultation & Submissions


    From time to time MidCentral District Health Board consults with the public on significant projects and issues facing the district. This consultation is undertaken to gain public input into the Board’s decision making process. Public input is important to the Board and it encourages people to have their say.

  • Trusts & Fundraising


    Initiatives and organisations that fundraise and/or provide scholarship grants for further education on behalf of MidCentral District Health Board.
